DTLA Film Fest Award-Winning Filmmaker Launches New Film Distribution Company

DTLA Film Fest Shorts Make Oscar List
Three shorts films that made their Los Angeles premiere screenings at the 2023 DTLA Film Festival were shortlisted by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences. The films are:
- “Bear” (Switzerland) by director Morgan Found — An amateur filmmaker who has filmed bears for years, contacts a film school looking for someone to edit his images into a film. A student comes forward. But when she digitises his archive, she discovers that the recordings are not only of bears. A discussion ensues about the power of a gaze and its voyeuristic violence.
- “Black Girls Play: The Story of Hand Games” (U.S.) by director Joe Brewster — “Play” takes a historical look at the significant effect that Black girls have had on popular culture and Black musical aesthetics. Tracing back centuries, through an examination of African culture, the film takes a deep dive into the use of hand games and other artistic communications to combat cultural language that was forbidden.
- “Wild Summon” (U.K.) by directors Karn Arieli and Saul Freed — A natural history fantasy film, following the dramatic life cycle of the wild salmon in human form. Narrated by Marianne Faithfull.
Congratulations to our alum filmmakers!
New Diversity Study Reinforces Mission of DTLA Film Fest
The latest findings by the University of Southern California’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative have found that progress in hiring women and people of color as film directors stalled last year.
The study blames the hiring practices of major Hollywood studios. It also blasted the studios’ promises for more inclusion after George Floyd’s murder and the #StopAsianHate movement as “performative acts” and “not real steps towards fostering change,” according to reporting by Los Angeles Times.
“Despite breakout films like ‘Barbie,’ the study underscores that the Hollywood studios are actually regressing when it comes to diversity in front of and behind the came. Our mission of screening movies in Los Angeles by filmmakers from groups underrepresented by the for-profit industry seems more relevant than ever,” said DTLF Film Festival co-founder Henry Priest.
